Guji, a remote and lushly forested area in southeastern Ethiopia, is known for its high elevations where coffee farms here often start at 2,000 meters and climb higher. Guji feels wild and untouched, giving its coffee a distinct quality. Near Taro in the Odo Shakiso district, Kayon Mountain Coffee Estate, founded by local Ismael Hassen, spans 500 hectares and grows select Ethiopian arabica varieties bred for quality and disease resistance. The estate’s coffee showcases a delicate sweetness, reflecting both the region’s natural purity and meticulous farming methods.
Kayon Mountain stands out in Ethiopia, where large coffee estates are rare. This independent estate exports directly, bypassing Ethiopia’s Commodity Exchange, which allows for higher quality control. Founded in 2012 as part of a Guji government initiative supporting organic and sustainable farming, the estate has expanded in recent years and sources additional cherries from local organic farms. Guji represents Ethiopia’s new wave of coffee innovation, blending conservation with high-quality coffee production, and positioning itself as an emerging origin with a unique flavor profile and commitment to environmental stewardship.
